Death of Scholars of Sunnah

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَقْبِضُ الْعِلْمَ انْتِزَاعًا يَنْتَزِعُهُ مِنْ الْعِبَادِ وَلَكِنْ يَقْبِضُ الْعِلْمَ بِقَبْضِ الْعُلَمَاءِ حَتَّى إِذَا لَمْ يُبْقِ عَالِمًا اتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ رُءُوسًا جُهَّالًا فَسُئِلُوا فَأَفْتَوْا بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ فَضَلُّوا وَأَضَلُّوا

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah does not withhold knowledge by snatching it away from His servants, but rather He withholds knowledge by taking the souls of scholars, until no scholar remains and people follow ignorant leaders. They are asked and they issue judgments without knowledge. Thus, they are astray and lead others astray.”

عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ مَوْتُ الْعَالِمِ ثُلْمَةٌ لَا يَسُدُّهَا شَيْءٌ مَا اخْتَلَفَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

Al-Hasan reported: Ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The death of a scholar is a loss that cannot be replaced for as long as the day and night revolve.” (Shu’ab al-Imān lil-Bayhaqī 1590)

عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْن مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَدْرُونَ كَيْفَ يَنْقُصُ الْإِسْلَامُ قَالُوا كَمَا يَنْقُصُ صِبْغُ الثَّوْبِ وَكَمَا يَنْقُصُ مِنَ الدَّابَّةِ وَكَمَا يَقْسُو الدِّرْهَمُ عَنْ طُولِ الْحَبْيِ قَالَ إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَمِنْهُ وَأَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَوْتُ أَوْ ذَهَابُ الْعُلَمَاءِ

Abu Wa’il reported: Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Do you know how Islam is weakened?” They said, “Just as the dye of a garment fades, or as an animal gets tired, or as a coin is rusted by the passage of time.” Abdullah said, “That is surely part of it, but even worse than that is the death or disappearance of the scholars.”

Mountains of knowledge, defenders of tauhid, sunnah, salafi call. They learnt the blessed knowledge of deen from teachers, scholars of sunnah, they acted upon it, called and guided people towards it and strived with great patience in all of it.

Dear brothers of sunnah,

Hearing these words of our prophet ( صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم), fear of ignorance, fear of fitnah, fear & perseverance to protect our Imaan fills our hearts. Supplication to Allah is our only hope. His guidance, mercy and forgiveness is all we ask for. We seek His aid and we seek from Him, a good ending as bestowed upon our salaf.

“….and people follow ignorant leaders. They are asked and they issue judgments without knowledge. Thus, they are astray and lead others astray.”

We are living in this era as many Ulemah have pointed out. Strangeness increases as time passes, Voice of truth is shattered by death of people of true knowledge.

Fitnah spreads due to ignorant leaders as mentioned in the hadees. Ignorant leaders, callers dress themselves, beautify themselves with knowledge that does not benefit themselves and others. They are upon misguidance and they call to misguidance.

May Allah protect us from them and guidance us to the gathering of beneficial knowledge.

“Verily, Allah does not withhold knowledge by snatching it away from His servants, but rather He withholds knowledge by taking the souls of scholars, until no scholar remains…”

In this short article, We have highlighted only some of scholars who are well-known. Many unknown virtuous people may have also returned to Allah.

May Allah have mercy on them all.

Sacrifice and service of our Ulema us sunnah cannot be enumerated in just few pages. Their perseverance in learning the knowledge of Quran and sunnah, living according to it, teaching to people around the world through various means and being patient with all the slanders, rumours, lies, oppositions from the ahlul bidah wal hawa and the kuffars.

Their lessons, classes, lectures, journeys, authorships, advises and so on. What a virtuous life, they had! May Allah reward them with jannathul Firdous.

Due to fear of doing injustice, we have not mentioned about the services of each of the scholars. Their works, students and many details have to be made known to people to benefit from it and turn to the path of Ahlus sunnah.

We have mentioned their teachers, so that people in our era(where fitnah makers, false callers are widespread in the name of religion and dawah) can realize on how knowledge is obtained, from where it is taken from, how it is carried, how it is acted upon, how scholars defend the sunnah of our prophet and call people to it.

No person is born as a scholar or a carrier of knowledge. Knowledge is carried by learning it from the scholars of their era. People out of ignorance and hastiness, are not guided in realizing this pure methodology of Ahlul hadees in learning, carrying and conveying the ‘Amanah’/Knowledge of Islam’.

Words of the people of knowledge are ignored; ignorant leaders start to lead the ummah in the name of dawah, fatwa, education, etc.

May Allah protect us from fitnah, keep us firm upon true Islam.

Let us strive, to the best of our ability, to benefit from people of knowledge and virtue with whom Allah has blessed us, to support the people of knowledge, the call of truth, the call to peace, success in this world and hereafter seeking the pleasure of Allah. Grateful servants of Allah are those realize His blessings, provisions and thank Him with true sincerity.

May Allah bless us all to be thankful, to be mindful(remembrance) of Him, to worship Him Alone.
